Didgeridoo ,Chapman Stick live performance
This is a show I just played in June and recorded some songs live. I will post more from the event. All music is played with no tracks. The subtle kick drum is played with a "Porch Board" I chose an Eastern style using the didgeridoo as the rhythmic drone.
This technique allows me to arrange on the fly giving the music a different type of spontinaity.

This song was Written by Daniel Alomía Robles a Peruvian composer. The music was based on Peruvian folk music. Later Simon and Garfunkle popularized the song with an english version. I will further explain the playing techniques in a new series of shorts dedicated to the Chapman Stick and string tapping techniques.

When I play this song live I go more up tempo to give it a slight bluegrass feel. Also here I used a little bit of chorus effect by shifting the audio a tiny bit mixed with a second copy. I lived In West Virginia for a couple years and had a wonderful experience in the mountains of Greenbrier county. I loved to travel on back roads to gigs when i could. This song by John Denver paints the image...

This music was improvised by "randomly" selecting each new chord as I played. Most of the chords were major 9 or minor 9. I found I could freely play the next chord without adhering to a key. The melody would follow the chord structure then change with each new chord. I will explain this for those who are interested in a later video.
Cause We Ended As Lovers / Jeff Beck / written by Stevie Wonder

It was fun and educational to work on Jeff Beck's amazing style and articulation on the Chapman Stick. A quote from Carlos Santana..... "Ever since I was a child I've always been very attracted to melodies. Whether I hear Jeff Beck, a choir, an ocean or the wind, there's always a melody in there. Santana"
Carry on My Wayward Son / Kansas

Arranging all the parts on the Chapman Stick was a challenge on this song. All music in the video was recorded live. The first time I saw Kansas they were opening for Queen (If my memory is correct) The thing that impressed me was their Improvisations in their songs.

It was totally inspiring to jam with these 2 excellent musicians, Michael Manring on Bass and Rick Alegria on drum set. The show was recorded on a single camera mike. The show was performed at the Smiling Dogs Tavern in Kelseyville CA on Feb 9th 2024. Special thanks to for owner Mike Broadbent for filming and recording the event.

This was fun to fun to play music from a band that has as impromptu jamming style with players such as Jerry Garcia. As a musician i love to play around with improvisation in my arrangements even in brief sections.
O' Carolan's Welcome

In this song I worked on capturing the feel of the Celtic Harp. Listening to this style of music has helped me develop more expression through string sustain. Turlough O' Carolan 1670 - 25 March 1738) was a blind Celtic harper, composer and singer in Ireland whose great fame is due to his gift for melodic composition.

I recoded a live version 30 years ago. This version features a lot of double improvising where I am improvising with both hands instead of using a memorized pattern in either hand. This technique is explained at the end of the video. This idea has been a main practice and focus of my style for several years.
Wish You Were Here / Pink Floyd

This video was Recorded at Ragle regional park, released april 8th the day of the solar eclipse. The sculpture is part of the peace garden. I used occasional strumming to capture the feel of the acoustic guitar by David Gilmour. One of my favorite bands Pink Floyd, had such a great sound and messages inside their lyrics.
Celtic music by the sea

This video was created live at Shell Beach in Northern CA. One of my favorite spots for tide pools etc. I included the outdoor sounds that were recorded on the camera. The song is a traditional Celtic song "Star Of The County Down". Let me know what you think, as I am planning on performing in more nature settings.

I knew you were one of the OG Chapman Stick players, but hearing you play it along with the didgeridoo is mind-blowing!
When I was very young, this song was my world. I always felt disconnected from this world, but music was how I coped. I want this song played when I pass. All 4 of my kids play several instruments, but I never did. I have been a beginner guitar player for over 45 years 😂. I guess one of my children better learn to play it.
Really very nice video but view rate is very low
I agree, but I totally appreciate you and everyone who listens in and is supportive. Thank you!
🔥🔥🔥🤟
Before even seeing the title, my mind wondered: Is that a Didgeridoo?
This man's coordination is just insane. Circular breathing on the didgeridoo, complex and fast melodies at the right hand, complex bass notes with swing at the left hand and kick drum with the right foot.
Thank You. I first learned the Didgeridoo as a health practice for breathing and semi meditation. After a year or so I thought what if I tried playing along with the Stick? Eventually multiple parts become automatic.
Also, the ending reminded me of Steely Dan. Particularly the song "Do it again"
Sounds beautiful! How do you record your sound?
That was wonderful! Thanks Robert! 😀
What is give to see this live in my life
Such a talented musician! Truly a lifetime of practice needed.
Kia ora!
I remember my trip to New Zealand (Wonderful!) and hope to return one day soon. All the best for you and thanks for listening.
Fantastic!
Bravo bravo, lindo demais é arte pura
amazing ,greetings from Spain!!Huge work!
Thank you. I was supposed to be traveling through Spain this month but it was cancelled. I hope to be there next year. Most likely near Barcelona and then Portugal.
That was beautiful. Thanks for uploading!
Cool! Thanks again Bob!
Thanks again for listening!

Can it do metal??
Mostly Yes and perhaps no. It depends on what type of sound you are looking for. I play a few Metallica songs but my sound is mostly clean. I find the rapid distorted parts don't translate well with my sound. However I have run the instrument through effects and can get a similar sound.
Красивая система👍👍👍
Спасибо, рада, что вам понравилось
Man what a talent you have. Sensational.
Thank you. I don't know if you have seen the Stick before but it is nice to play the Stick for a new audience.
Incredible
I wanna see you play more!
Thank you. I perform mostly in Northern CA but do travel at times. I am working on going to Japan and Europe next year. I have a calendar at my stickmusic.com site.
So sweet!
Never heard of it??? But after watching you play it, now I'm very interested. 👍
Thank you. Whenever I perform which is usually outdoor festival type gigs I ask how many of you have seen this instrument? I get perhaps 1 or 2 hands out of say 100 or more. It's only been around for 50 years! glad you like it.
Espectacular Bob, el mejor!
The og harpeji
I was just thinking the exact same thing
holy fucking shit that is awesome
I remember meeting you years ago at the heritage days festival at Twin Lakes park in Greensburg Pa. still love hearing you play. Thanks for creating great music
Thank you, That was a while ago! If I remember correctly wasn't I playing on a floating dock or some sort of small island with a gazebo on it?
Tony Levin.
Eddie approves. ❤❤❤
Damn i bet your wife is the most satisfied woman this side of the Mississippi river 🤣
Wow, what a cool instrument and fantastic demonstration!
Thank you. At gigs I ask how many of you have seen this instrument? I get perhaps 1 or 2 hands out of around 100 or more. It's only been around for 50 years! Stick Enterprises is the manufacturer.
Amazing! Thanks for sharing!
The only time I’ve heard one played live was Blue Man Group, I gained a lot of respect for it
Did they feature the player. I hope so. When I saw them the Stick player was not highlighted. Still a real fun band! Glad you liked it!
@@bobculbertsonyeah, he was up in corner of the stage by himself and there were lights on the stick itself so to me it looked like he was playing a blue fluorescent light like a upright slap bass. It was a long time ago like 25-30 years ago
This is sick
That's bad ass
You are a great ambassador for the instrument. I see you appear to have a capo at the x-fret on the bass side. Is that to allow the open strings to ring on pull offs? I really admire your work, always pushing the boundaries. 🖖
Yes, the capo is there to allow open string pull offs. I do have be more careful about unwanted open sounds in odd keys but really this is not difficult. i originally planned on taking the capo on and off for those keys or lots of modulation, but accidentally left it on and found it is not really hard to avoid unwanted open strings. Also of course you can move the capo for key change.
@@bobculbertson Thank you for the explanation 🖖
Sounds like a Gospel song.
Thank you for creating this master piece! We played it when walking in on our wedding😊
Beautiful presentation and performance! Great sound!
Thank You, I am happy to hear you enjoyed it. I always felt the original was such a nature connected song.
Gorgeous. I've been in awe of your virtuosity since the first time I heard you perform at the Ann Arbor Art Fair many years ago.
Excellent !❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank You💚
Thanks for sharing, Bob, you're inspiring as always!!
Thanks! I hope this video gives you some ideas.
Thanks for sharing! I just got a Stick recently and it's very intimidating getting started
Happy to hear you got a Stick. It is a challenge in the beginning but you will soon get used to the tuning. There are simple techniques that sound full. I have some free basic lessons. All the best!
Your music is amazing! I met you many years ago when you were playing at an event, but I can't remember when or where. I still have the CD you sold me. Great music!
This piece often gets a strange wrap but you have to remember it was written as a love song. Both this instrument and the wonderful rendition help to bring this piece out of the "creepy organ song" context and highlight the love that was put into it. Wonderfully done
Суки где звук?!
The man is an orchestra! I am unable to think of a better Chap-stick player?
Thank you ❤️
